Urbane Mitte am Gleisdreieck (Urban Center at Gleisdreieck)

Joining forces – Urban Mitte

Opened in May 2013, the “Park am Gleisdreieck” covers an area of some 26 hectares and features a varied parkland scenery of extensive meadows, trees, sports fields and play areas. With direct access to the U1 and U2 U-Bahn lines, various bus routes and the nearby Yorkstrasse S-Bahn station, there are several transport connections to choose from. Thanks to its central location, the area is also easily accessed by car.

Both the location and nature of this site offer a range of great opportunities – and challenges, as well. As a result, the owner was determined to involve as many partners as possible right from the start in order to ensure this undeveloped spot would be equipped to meet full public approval. A series of workshops was therefore used to survey the interests, opinions and conclusions of both experts and the public – these were then analysed and used as the basis for forming specific objectives. The results of the workshop discussions serve as the foundation for the next phase of the project.

Urbane Mitte – urban development and architecture competition

As part of the ongoing development process, the urban development and architectural planning competition has provided the basis for continuing the construction project. A total of 25 renowned regional, national and international architecture and urban planning companies were invited to submit forward-looking urban development and architectural concepts for the Urban Mitte project – forward-looking from an environmental, economic and social planning perspective.

The competition complies with the RPW 2013 guidelines for planning competitions and is being held on an anonymous basis in two phases. Participants are expected to use the consensus concept that has already been set out to create a structural plan for a site-appropriate and diverse “usage combination” that will enrich the surroundings. Architectural elements, the urban planning context and the effect of the buildings and spaces to be developed must of course also be taken into account.

Overview

The “Urbane Mitte” project has a prime location on one of the last remaining unused plots of land right by the Gleisdreieck U-Bahn station and also close to Potsdamer Platz. With forward-looking, creative vision, a fully future-focused living space is being designed that will be able to adapt flexibly to new developments and changing user requirements.
